Cartridge

A small housing, often referred to by engineers as a “top” and “bottom,” interacts directly with the microfluidic chip(s), allowing liquid or air to pass through. Usually disposable along with the chip(s).

Cartridge Holder

Also referred to as a “frame,” “housing,” or other. Used when a consumable holds multiple cartridges for testing. Often, this part includes a passage (or a through-hole to integrate other passages, such as tubes) to send or receive fluids between the cartridge and the instrument.

Connectors/Fitments

Connectors and fitments ensure the flow of fluid among different passages is secure. There are many off-the-shelf products for connectors, but some devices require custom connectors or fitments to match their unique usage of tubes or pouches.

Elastomer Seals & Gaskets

Used to seal fluids (e.g., as a direct interface to the microfluidic chip, between the consumable and the instrument, between a cap/lid and a bottle/reservoir).

Manifold

Various uses; often has liquid, air, or gas passing through. Used in instruments and consumables.

Reservoirs or Bottles and Caps

These parts hold liquid for reaction or dispensed residuals.

Tight Seals & Leak Prevention

Microfluidics components require tight seals to prevent fluid, gas, and air leaks.
